With Day Zero looming, it’s no surprise that a number of water-related messages are making the rounds on social media.
However, the City of Cape Town has warned hoaxers to stop spreading misinformation, and for residents to first verify information with the City before taking action.
In the latest hoax message, an individual claims to have received a letter from the City, stating that tap water is now undrinkable.
The message on WhatsApp reads: “Hi, we have just received a letter from City of Cape Town that under no circumstances are we to drink water from taps unless it is boiled. As of today the water has been declared contaminated. We have been told to alert our families. All water even for use of mixing of juice and for our animals must be boiled. It will apparently make us and our animals very sick.”
The Daily Voice sent an inquiry to the City who confirmed the message was a hoax.
Councillor Eddie Andrews responded to the alert, saying: “There are lots of message relating to water circulating and not all of them accurate. If you are unsure then feel free to ask me and I will confirm.”
Other hoaxes were easier to spot.
In a newsletter purported to be from “Executive Mayor” Helen Zille, the language used and lagbol water-saving tips were obvious give-aways.
Some of the tips include: “We appeal to citizens especially whiskey drinkers to please abstain from having water as a dash.
“Where possible drink neat shots. Bars, pubs and restaurants have been [banned] from serving water as a dash. Only ice cubes.
And “Running and other physical activity, including sex dehydrates you, and makes you want to drink water, hence we are strongly against such activities.”
It also suggests people go to the toilet in groups of four before flushing the loo.
