An aspiring young poet from Khayelitsha wowed international audiences last Saturday when she delivered a stunning performance at the opening Test match between the Springboks and the British and Irish Lions.
Mbali Mgxaji, 12, performed a poem called Namkelekile eAfrika (Welcome to Africa) at Cape Town Stadium and says it was a dream come true for her.
“I always get inspired by young children showing off their talent on TV and I knew one day it would be me,” she says.
“But I did not think it would be so soon.
“I am grateful to the Khayelitsha Art School & Rehabilitation Centre for making this possible.”

Mbali was wearing a traditional dress called an umbhaco while holding an itshoba.
The Grade 6 pupil at Nkanini Primary School was among 51 performers and says: “I chose that poem to make the visiting nations feel comfortable, telling them about the riches of art on our continent.
“When I joined the centre, I was into acting which I do well but they taught us there is more we could do with our talents and here I am today.”
The young girl says she was paaping before her performance.
“Yes I was nervous when I walked in, all eyes were on me and it was my first time getting such a big honour.
“But the moment I started my poem, I had the response and I knew it was my moment and I gave it my all.
“I hope it inspires other kids to follow their dreams and wishes, this is the start of a brighter future for me.
“I want to make my mom and my community proud.”
Mandisi Sindo, the managing director at KASI RC, says: “We sourced 51 performers for the Test match but she was only the poet and the rest were warriors.
“I am always excited when one or a group of our 115 students get an opportunity.
“This is big not just for her but for other kids out there. “That is why talent and young stars like her need to be exposed.
“It's a great move too to inspire the community.”
