Two teen meisies were shot in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain after getting caught in gang crossfire.
A gunfight between rival gangs, believed to be the
Americans and the Fancy Boys, broke out in Ruwenzori Street, shortly before 4pm on Sunday.
The girls, aged 14 and 16, both from Tafelsig, were walking in the street at the time. The younger girl was shot in the foot, while the 16-year-old took a bullet in her left hand.
Both girls were rushed to the nearest hospital and were yesterday found to be in a stable condition.
A community member, Farida Caplan, 56, says she is tired of innocent people getting hurt and wants police to be more visible and respond faster to emergency calls.
“The police must show themselves at all times then this won’t happen. Come take these gangs down, before they kill all our children,” the mother said.
“These girls are innocent. They were shot in daylight. Die gangsters worry nie meer wie kry seer nie. It could have been their own mothers.
“I’m just glad the girls survived, but our children are not safe outside anymore.”
The alleged shooters have been named by people in the area on social media, but police say their investigation is still ongoing and no suspects have been arrested.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut, confirms: “On Sunday, just before 4pm, two females aged 14 and 16 were shot and wounded in Ruwenzori Street, Tafelsig by unknown suspects.
“It is suspected that the victims were caught in crossfire when suspects shot at each other. The circumstances surrounding this shooting are being investigated.”
