A video which shows a man being run over by his own car at a petrol station has gone viral.
The incident took place at the Engen garage in Plattekloof earlier this month.
On Thursday, Engen confirmed the incident and said the man was injured.
However, police said they have no record of the incident which took place on Thursday, 9 May at 5.30pm and which had been captured on the garage’s security cameras.
The video, which is a minute long, shows the red Toyota Tazz standing stationary at the Engen Plattekloof Convenience Centre.
A man is seen standing in front of the vehicle with the bonnet raised, checking something in the engine.
STILL: Other the customers and the woman attend to the ou
It has yet to be established whether the man was trying to fix anything in the engine or if he was doing a routine oil and water check.
A few seconds later, the car starts moving and the man tries to get out of the way, but trips and falls to the ground.
A woman in the car can be seen trying to steer the vehicle to stop it crashing into a bakkie in front of it.
She manages to turn the car, but doesn’t seem to realise the car had gone over the man.
A petrol attendant jumps into action and opens the driver’s side door and pulls up the handbrake.
The woman gets out of the car and appears to go into shock as she realises the man is under the vehicle, grabbing her head and screaming.
Engen staff members run to the car and lift it up, pulling the man to safety.
At this stage the vehicle starts moving again and the door hits the man’s arm.
A petrol attendant tries to stop the car and the video ends.
Police spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel André Traut, says the matter was not reported: “It is not part of a police investigation. The incident was not reported to Parow SAPS.”
But according to a police source, “it was just a freak accident”.
Engen spokesman, Gavin Smith, says the injured man was taken to hospital: “Engen can confirm an incident in which a customer was injured at Engen Plattekloof Convenience Centre on 9 May 2019 at approximately 5.30pm.
“The injured customer was immediately assisted by quick thinking Engen staff, treated on the scene and hospitalised.
“No other persons were injured in the incident. All relevant authorities were notified.”
