Working from home is proving to be a challenge for parliamentary workers after a naked woman appeared on screen during a meeting on Tuesday.
In a statement, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Faith Muthambi, said she was outraged and embarrassed about the “unholy” image.
A member of the National House of Traditional Leaders, Nkosi Xolile Ndevu, was discussing the deaths of initiates at schools in the Eastern Cape during a Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) portfolio meeting when a kaalgat woman appeared behind him.
Her breasts are clearly visible in the video and the screen quickly switches to Muthambi who realised what was happening.
An embarrassed Xolile, who appears to be in his bedroom with the bathroom behind him, covers his face while apologising profusely to Muthambi.
Before the scene could be deleted, it was already recorded by a member of the public who shared it on social media.
A clearly irate Muthambi asked Xolile if he did not tell the people in his household that he was in a meeting.
“The person behind you is not properly dressed, we are seeing everything, yoooh,” she exclaimed while rolling her eyes dramatically.
“Please, nkosi, did you tell them you are in a meeting? This is very disturbing what we are seeing and this is not the first time this is happening. Every time we see you we see these unholy pictures. You are live on television,” she told the member.
Ndevu could not stop apologising after the embarrassing incident.
“I did not know there was someone behind me, I am so sorry, I am so embarrassed,” he said while covering his face.
Muthambi said she was outraged at the incident: “The naked woman was not part of the meeting. She was in the same room where the participant in the meeting was. We regret and condemn the incident in the strongest terms.
“It is regrettable that this kind of footage, which is embarrassing the committee, happens for the second time in meetings between the committee and the NHTL. I am going to engage with the leadership of the NHTL,” emphasised Muthambi.
There have been many incidents where members of parliament were caught in awkward situations while attending meetings virtually.
DA MP Tsepo Mhlongo was busted doing shopping during an online parliamentary session in August last year when his laptop camera turned on by accident.
In June, an Independent Development Trust officer attended a virtual meeting while lying topless in bed.
