The Department of Correctional Services is “ready and waiting” to welcome Oscar Pistorius back.

The convicted murderer is to be sentenced by Judge Thokozile Masipa in the Northern Gauteng High Court in Pretoria today.

The Olympian spent nearly 10 months in jail after initially being found guilty of a lesser crime, culpable homicide.

A senior officer at the Kgosi Mampuru II Prison in Pretoria has told The Sunday Independent that “we are ready and waiting to accommodate him in his previous cell”.

This will be Oscar’s second appearance before Judge Masipa to plead for leniency and to try and escape the mandatory 15-year jail term required by law. Prosecutors are set to push for the maximum sentence.

Masipa initially convicted and sentenced Pistorius for culpable homicide for the 2013 shooting that claimed the life of his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The State appealed against the conviction and in December the Supreme Court of Appeal set aside the culpable homicide conviction and found Pretorius guilty of murder.

Pistorius tried to lodge a Constitutional Court application to overturn the Supreme Court of Appeal decision. But this was denied.

Pistorius’ jail cell was revamped to accommodate someone with special needs.
