A 37-year-old woman has died after she was hit by a train in Parow on Monday.
An inquest docket has been opened by police.
The unidentified woman’s body was found lying between the train tracks at Oosterzee station just after 3pm.
Metrorail spokesperson, Riana Scott, confirmed the incident and says their initial report suggests the woman committed suicide.
“Our preliminary report indicates the incident occurred [Monday] at 2.41pm. The circumstances and the deceased’s behaviour are consistent with suicide,” Scott said.
The incident resulted in delays of over 45 minutes for commuters travelling along the Northern Line.
“The operational impact was three trains delayed for 46 minutes to accommodate SAPS and emergency services on-site,” Scott said.
ER24 spokesman, Russel Meiring, says the woman sustained multiple injuries.
“ER24 paramedics, along with Metro Rescue, arrived at 3.06pm to find the body of a woman lying on the tracks. Paramedics assessed the woman and found she had sustained numerous injuries and showed no signs of life. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for her and she was declared dead,” Meiring said.
SAPS’ Captain FC van Wyk says the incident is under investigation.
He said no foul play was suspected at this stage.
“This office can confirm the incident whereby a 37-year-old woman was fatally injured at Oosterzee station. An inquest was registered for further investigation,” Van Wyk said.
