Matric pupils from several high schools in and around Delft are being treated to a king’s breakfast every morning to help them through their final exams by a group of aunties.
Louise Hendricks, who lives in Mendoza Street, along with her team of Angels For Change serve breakfast to approximately 70 children each day.
Most of the children come from Voorbrug High School, which is just around the corner, but before 7am, matrics from as far as Khayelitsha also arrive to get something to eat before school.
The kids are served porridge and tea, a toasted sandwich and worsies, eggs and tuna salad.
All the ingredients are sponsored by kind samaritans who are worried about matrics writing their finals on a honger maag, says Louise.
“We started this in 2013. This is what God set out for me and my people to do,” she says.
“We start at 5am and work tirelessly until all the kids are served a hearty meal.
“God has blessed us and we would like to do this more often,” Louise says.
Before leaving, the kids pray, and are given a hug and encouragement for the day.
For some, it would be the only meal for the day.
Katelin Hoedemaker, 19, who is in matric at Voorbrug High School, says: “We are grateful for the aunties who give us so much peace and a good meal. Some of us do not know what it is like to have a table set for us like this, and it means everything.”
