An Elsies River ouma was given a lekker party by her proud neighbours after she celebrated her 106th birthday last week.
Ouma Catherine Blugenhout from Eureka Estate was given a nice surprise on Sunday when her neighbour and a local pastor and his family gave her “a proper party” to celebrate her impressive milestone.
The Light Of God Community Outreach Ministry was draped in pink and purple decor and a three-course meal was served to the 40 guests who are all close to Catherine.
Pastor Vivian Meyer says the bash was to show their appreciation to Catherine and to celebrate a milestone very few people reach.
“It’s a privilege to us to still have ouma Catherine in our midst. Today our youth are constantly dying and we cannot all say we will have the favour of living to this wonderful age.

“To live to 106-years-old is only by the grace of God,” Meyer says.
Meyer says he has been a neighbour of Catherine for over a decade.
“Since I moved into the area 12 years ago, I have come to know and love ouma Catherine. She is an extremely humble person and by having this party for her is to show appreciation to her,” Meyer adds.
Ouma Catherine has 10 children, eight of whom are still alive.

She has 45 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 20 great-great-grandchildren and two great great great grandchildren.
Her daughter Sophie Blugenhout, 77, who has been looking after her for the past 20 years, says she is very blessed to still have her mother.
“My mother does not speak much. She cannot walk anymore and she’s in a wheelchair at the moment. However, the only illness she suffers from is arthritis and for that we are blessed.

“I can only thank the Lord that I still have my mother in my life,” Sophie says.
Ward Councillor, Beverley van Reenen also attended.
“I’m sure you are tired of counting the years of your age. Age is merely the number of years that the world has been enjoying you. I wish you to be always happy and healthy as today! May you stay healthy and happy for the years to come. Happy birthday, I wish you another wonderful year,” Van Reenen said.
