Two Bonteheuwel laaities escaped death after being shot at while playing dominoes in the street.
A group of boys was playing in Yellowwood Road when shortly after 7pm on Saturday, a blue car drove by and the occupants opened fire.
Shane Abrahams, 14, says the group gathered to play dominoes because they had nothing else to do and got a skrik when the gunshots went off.
“We were just playing and then a blue car came past. We didn’t see what type of car it was but they rolled down the windows and started shooting.
“We just ran and they shot me in my legs,” he said yesterday.
Shane was taken to the hospital and treated for his injuries which included two bullet wounds to both of his thighs. He was released yesterday.
“The bullet went in on the left leg and came out my other leg,” he says.
His friend, Akeem Isaacs, 21, was not so lucky.
His father, Achmat Isaacs, says he came to the front of the house after hearing the gunshots and was shocked to see his son run towards him revealing a bullet wound in his stomach.
“Hy het hier gehardloop en toe skrik ek toe ek sien hy is geskiet,” says the dad.
Achmat says they have no idea why the shooting happened and were scared their son would not make it.
When the Daily Voice visited the family yesterday, Isaacs said his son were still in Groote Schuur Hospital.
“The doctors said he would make it. We feel very bad, hy is a goeie laaitie.”
The teary-eyed father explains the 21-year-old was completing a course in Air Traffic Control at Cape Town International Airport and he did everything to keep his son safe.
“I always warned him, when you hear gunshots, dan sak jy,” he says while holding his head.
Police spokesperson, Captain FC Van Wyk, confirms the incident and says: “An attempted murder case was opened for investigation”.
No arrests have been made yet.
Ward councillor, Angus McKenzie, visited the families and called the shootings senseless.
“This area has been very quiet for a long time and this shooting is just senseless. These are good boys who were just playing dominoes. I will be keeping a close eye on this case,” he says.
