The ongoing taxi war has claimed another victim, this time a 29-year-old breadwinner.
The taxi driver was shot and killed on the corner of Duinefontein and Lansdowne Road in Manenberg on Thursday morning.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk says Masixole Mtukuncana from Mfuleni died of multiple gunshot wounds sustained to his upper body and Manenberg police are investigating a murder case.
“SAPS members received a complaint of a shooting this morning about 7.30am and on their arrival at the scene, they found the body of a 29-year-old male behind the steering wheel of the taxi. The motive for the attack is taxi-related,” Van Wyk explains.
An aunt of the victim, Nophakazela Mbeleko, says the murder has left them all shocked and traumatised.
“I cannot believe what my eyes saw this morning. How could we lose Masixole just like that?
“He was such a kind-hearted and respectful person amongst our family, so determined to build his home and provide for his parents.
“His passing is a great loss for us. But when will these shootings end?” says Nophakazela who confirmed the identity of her nephew at the scene.
She says Masixole started working as a taxi driver last year and was an independent, responsible young man with big dreams for his life.
She says his parents live in Willowvale in the Eastern Cape.
He is the third victim of taxi violence-related incidents since last month.
Other victims were Cata president Victor Wiwi who was shot and killed in Nyanga and taxi owner Goodman Lomboza who was shot in Khayelitsha.
