Staff at the Brackenfell Post Office got the skrik of their lives after armed men robbed them of thousands of rands of Sassa payouts on Friday afternoon.
Sassa beneficiaries received their payouts a day earlier on Friday, but were left high and dry as robbers took the geld and fled.
The armed men raided the Post Office in Paradys Street in St. Michaels just before noon.
This is the third Post Office robbed of its Sassa payouts in less than three months.
Two months ago the Maitland and Kraaifontein Post Offices were also robbed by armed men.
A source at the scene says the men stormed the Post Office.
“It was just before 12pm and two men just came storming into the offices. Fortunately, nobody was injured even though shots were fired.”
According to the source, people noticed a bakkie fleeing the scene at the time of the robbery.
“The guys waiting for work and always hanging around the Post Office area came forward to state they saw a white Ford Bantam bakkie sped past them from the direction of the Post Office, but they could not say in which direction they drove,” the source revealed.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant George Mjiwu, confirmed a case of business robbery is open for investigation.
“Suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash in a white Ford Bantam bakkie. No persons were injured [and] no arrests made yet,” Mjiwu said.
