The grandparents of a disabled Sassa beneficiary from Mitchells Plain say his payout for April and May has been stolen out of his bank account.
Isaac Hermanus, 72, a pensioner from Woodlands, says his 20-year-old grandson receives a disability grant of R1 700.
Isaac and his wife have been raising the mentally disabled young man since he was a
toddler after his mom died in a train accident.
“We went to withdraw his money and every time it said declined. On 9 May, I went to the SASSA offices in Town
Centre and I was told the money had been withdrawn.
“The money which was in the account was from April and May and there was R3 450. I asked where the money was withdrawn and was told it
happened on 4 June, at 8.30am at Musgrove in Diep River,” Isaac says.
The oupa says they do not even know anyone from Diep River.
“How could this be? I was then told to fill in a fraud affidavit from SASSA and an investigation would be opened regarding this incident. They told me we were not the first people to come for this specific problem,” Isaac explains.
Although his grandson received his grant for this month, Isaac says they’ve been struggling to get by and need the missing funds.
Last week, Joan Williams, 67, from Rocklands, discovered her pension was withdrawn during the early morning hours without her knowledge.
Sassa said it had reversed the transaction after their system picked up the irregularity and Joan has been reimbursed.
