The 41-year-old soldier who was found burnt in the boot of his car in Blue Downs on Sunday was possibly already dead when his car was set alight.
According to a source close to the investigation, the victim’s hands and feet had been bound, and he was thrown in the boot of his white Hyundai Accent.
“It is believed the soldier was stabbed to death as he had several stab wounds to his body,” says the source.
Last Monday, Theodore Loggenberg, 43, was arrested and charged with hijacking, kidnapping and murder.
He appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court where the matter was postponed to Thursday for bail information.
A 24-year-old man was also taken in by Mfuleni police, but he had not been charged yet, said National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila.
A delivery man had alerted cops to the incident.
The driver says four men were at the dead man’s car and acted suspiciously, so he decided to call the police.
“They looked nervous and one was wiping the car. One of the men was throwing liquid into the car and I called the cops,” he tells the Daily Voice.
“I only later realised it was petrol when I came back this way and the vehicle was on fire.”
Fire and Rescue Service discovered the burnt body of the soldier in the boot.
SANDF spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Hamilton Ngubane, confirmed that a soldier was found burnt to death in his car.
The man’s widow did not want to make his identity public yet, saying more arrests were expected.
