A suspect is expected to appear in court after cops busted him with abalone worth R1.2 million.
Police Spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said members of the Lwandle Police were conducting patrols in the area on Thursday when they received information about a vehicle transporting abalone from Hermanus en route to Cape Town.
He said that at about 2.15pm, a white Mercedes-Benz was stopped and searched along Vulindlela Road.
Swartbooi said that upon searching the vehicle, cops found eight bags containing a total of 855 units of abalone worth an estimated street value of R1.2 million.
The abalone was immediately confiscated and the 25-year-old man arrested and detained.
“Once charged, he is expected to make his court appearance in the Strand Magistrates’ Court on a charge of illegal transporting and possession of abalone,” Swartbooi said.
In an unrelated incident during the early hours of Friday morning, members of the police’s Flying Squad were conducting patrols along Valhalla Drive when they spotted a vehicle that had been used in a robbery in Bellville the previous day.
The vehicle was brought to a halt and both occupants were arrested and detained.
The suspects are 31 and 34 year old.
Swartbooi said that once charged, the suspects are expected to make an appearance at the Bellville Magistrates’ Court.
