Women of all ages in Vrygrond on Thursday protested to voice their concern about an alleged rapist who is roaming the streets of the community.
According to residents, a woman was raped on Saturday night, but after she went to report the incident to Muizenberg SAPS, the alleged rapist was arrested and released and is still amongst the community.
“We wanted to make a noise because one of our own was raped and the suspect is still roaming the streets,” says resident Nolukhanyo Zibaya
“The rape happened on Saturday night, 11 July, in Vuyo Road in Capricorn. The man is known to the victim.
“The victim was on her way to her boyfriend when the accused came out of nowhere and held a knife against her throat and raped her outdoors.”
She says the man left the victim, and was seen by people passing by her.
The woman told them she had reported the matter to Muizenberg cops and the suspect was arrested on Sunday, but was released the same day.
“We asked police why he was released and they told us that when they showed the victim his picture, she said she is not sure it was him,” said Zibaya.
But the woman told them the cops are lying and that she positively identified her rapist.
Police spokesman Colonel Andrè Traut says the man was arrested following the community’s meeting with Muizenberg SAPS: “The case is currently under investigation and the suspect was arrested on a charge of rape today (Thursday).”
