Bishop Lavis crime fighters are calling on South Africans to make their voices heard and sign an online petition calling for the bail application of murder accused Zane Kilian to be denied.
As the ex-rugby player is expected to make his bid for bail at court on Friday after being charged for the murder of top cop Lieutenant-Colonel Charl Kinnear, the Bishop Lavis Community Police Forum (CPF) says now is the time for people show their support.
The seasoned Anti-Gang Unit detective, who was working on several high profile cases which led to the arrest of police officers, was assassinated outside his Bishop Lavis home on 18 September by a lone gunman who fired three shots at his head.
Kilian, 39, is charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder and the illegal interception of Kinnear’s cellphone.
CPF chairperson Graham Lindhorst says they started the petition on Tuesday after it was revealed that Kilian intended to go ahead with his application for bail: “Kinnear’s death sparked an outcry especially when it was revealed that police protection had been removed from his home. Now is the time for people to show their support for his family and to stand up against police corruption.
“We are calling on South Africans to come out in their thousands and show their support by signing the petition. We believe Kilian should remain behind bars for the duration of the trial as his handlers will try and kill him outside.
“We also call on him to come clean about who hired him to track the phone.”
It is unclear where the bail hearing will be heard as it was decided to move the case from Bishop Lavis for safety reasons.
