A marathon runner, crime fighter and businessman has been dubbed “the bread man of the Cape Flats” after handing out thousands of loaves since lockdown began.
Youseff Kanouni, 46, of Woodstock is the chairperson of the Woodstock Policing Forum and says the Coronavirus pandemic has forced humanity to change their mindset by thinking of those living in poverty.
Every day, thanks to generous donors and digging into his own pocket, Yousseff manages to feed at least 150 families in communities such as Woodstock, Philippi, Salt River and Sea Point.
In April, the Daily Voice published a story of Yousseff who had completed a 22km half-marathon inside his home in one hour and 53 minutes.
The Moroccan-born athlete later took on the challenge of doing an indoor Two Oceans Marathon, which is 56km long.

Yousseff has completed 10 Two Oceans marathons and was to do his tenth Comrades Marathon this year before all sporting events were halted.
He is also a pace setter at Western Province meets.
To make sure everyone has something to eat at night, Yousseff sometimes breaks his fast in his car.
“For me this is not about religion, but humanity,” says Yousseff.
“When lockdown began I started thinking about what is people’s staple food.
“Bread is one of the most important meals, it can sustain a family living in poverty.
“I began with a few loaves a day, to nearly 200 now. This is thanks to donors such as local businessmen, shop owners, runners and ordinary people.
“In some households, they need two loaves of bread a day and we receive so much gratitude in those moments.”

He doesn’t take photos of the people who receive the donations, saying: “I do not like it when people’s faces are shown on social media when they receive food, for me it’s about their dignity.”
Yousseff says Covid-19 has brought hope and love to humanity again: “Nations are working together, families have more time for one another.
“Nature is taking a rest. Corona has opened our eyes to become better people.”
