An explosive report by the Hawks on the ongoing investigation into the assassination of Lieutenant-Colonel Charl Kinnear has revealed that Ukrainians were allegedly hired to kill the top cop.
The report by Warrant Officer Trevor Shaw details the events leading up to Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) commander Kinnear’s death.
The report, which was tabled at the bail hearing of Amaal Jantjies, is believed to be the basis for the arrests of alleged underworld kingpin Nafiz Modack, Zane Kilian, Jacques Cronje, Ricardo Morgan and Sergeant Ashley Tabisher.
The state alleges that the men, Jantjies and her berk, Jannick Adonis, are part of the “Nafiz Modack Enterprise” and are guilty of charges linked to Kinnear’s death.
The document states that Adonis, who is in the mang for charges including murder and attempted murder, worked with the AGU in the hopes that they would help him get bail.
In August 2019, he approached Sergeant Wayne Leukes saying he had information on Modack and wanted to meet with Kinnear.
During the meeting, he allegedly told Kinnear that Modack had been working with police officers and said he would give Kinnear recordings.
A meeting with Adonis was arranged by AGU boss Andre Lincoln who met with state prosecutor Blaine Lazarus about withdrawing the charges against Adonis, but Lazarus said this was not possible.
On 13 November 2019, Adonis then contacted another AGU officer and told him that Modack knew Kinnear and Lincoln were in Johannesburg and allegedly hired four Ukrainians to kill them but the hitmen could not find their targets.
The next day Colonel Andre Kay from Bishop Lavis SAPS was killed while pulling out of the driveway of his Bishop Lavis home and Adonis told cops that he had information about a plan to throw a hand grenade at Kinnear’s home.
The couple then allegedly tried to convince the AGU to allow the attack to continue in an attempt to trap Modack, but Lincoln and Kinnear refused.
AGU officers were sent to guard Kinnear’s home and a month after this meeting, arrested Faeez Smith with a grenade outside the house.
“He insisted that they conduct the operation at that time because nothing would stop Modack from getting other people or the Ukrainians to continue with the hit,” the report states.
Jantjies was arrested and her cellphones analysed, which Shaw said showed her alleged contact with Modack.
The case resumes on 20 July when the state is set to submit more affidavits from three other investigators.
