Support continues to pour in for the family of the security officer who was allegedly shot dead by police on Saturday night.
Marlin Fuller, 38, had gone out to tell his two daughters, who were having a jol near their Hanover Park home, that it was midnight and they needed to go inside.
At that moment, cops arrived at the scene. Officers ordered residents to lie on the ground and it’s not clear what led to shots being fired.
Marlin’s colleague, Francois Niemand, the operational manager at Deep Blue security, has started a fundraising campaign for his family.
“He was a dedicated and loyal employee. He was not just an employee but a friend as well, what happened to him is truly heartbreaking,” says Francois.
Marlin was stationed at Marina da Gama in Muizenberg and resident Heather Smith said they are still shocked by his death.
“We are so shocked by what happened to Marlin. I think it is worth mentioning that he was a private security officer who spent his life keeping residents of Marina da Gama safe in their homes,” she says.
“We, the Marina da Gama residents, are just heartbroken at the loss of this gentle giant.”
Wife Sharon says she appreciates the support they are receiving from the public.
The family was only contacted by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) on Tuesday.
Ipid acting spokesperson Sontaga Seisa says they are investigating the murder.
“Ipid does confirm that we received a report of a death as a result of police action in Hanover Park where an adult male person was allegedly shot and later died over the past weekend,” says Seisa.
“The matter was registered in Philippi SAPS. Ipid was activated and we just took over an investigation on the matter. Nobody is arrested yet.”
