Patrick Castle, 28, of Strandfontein, who worked for TSU Group as a High Risk Tactical Team armed response officer, passed away on Tuesday morning in hospital.
Patrick was one of the first responders to the attempted robbery scene at Shoprite, Nyanga Junction, in Duinefontein Road on Monday.
TSU is contracted to Shoprite, whose social grant paypoint had been targeted after 6am.
Patrick was wounded during a shootout between robbers and their team.
One of the three suspects was wounded and is in hospital under police guard.
A second suspect was shot dead by members of the police’s Special Task Force while hiding in the roof of the shop. A third suspect is still at large.
Ten people were held hostage, including cleaners, the manager and other Shoprite staff, but they were released unharmed after about seven hours.
Yesterday, Patrick’s sister Carmelita Dickenson, 38, shared their heartache of losing a loving father.
Patrick, who started working at TSU in January, was one of four children.
She says he had been married for five years and had one son.
“It is hard for us as a family because this was so sudden,” says Carmelita.
“He was also the only brother.
“His son, with whom Patrick was very close, is only five years old and now he has to adapt not having his father around. He was very hardworking, he was a good man, a good husband.”
Funeral arrangements for Patrick are still being arranged.
