According to a witness on the scene, a gang of diewe entered the Shoprite in the Mfuleni shopping centre and demanded cash.
“One of them had an AK47 and all the people came running out. I don’t know if they got any money but the people said two shots went off,” the man says.
Captain FC van Wyk confirmed the incident and says at 10.52am eight unidentified males entered the store.
He says six of them were armed and threatened the staff.
“They took an undisclosed amount of cash from the tills and fled the scene in a white Ford Bantam.”
According to a statement from Shoprite, they are assisting staff and customers of the Mfuleni branch who may require counselling following the robbery.
“The supermarket chain deplores the incidences of violence in its communities that prevent ordinary citizens from conducting their normal business in public places and deprive them of their right to safety,” the retailer said.
Police did not confirm whether or not shots were fired or if there were any injuries.
On 7 May, the Shoprite liquor store was robbed in Strandfontein Road, Pelican Park.
The store is located next to the supermarket.
Cops say four armed robbers stormed the shop at 6.15pm and demanded money before hitting a female security guard in the head with a gun.
No shots were fired, but the skelms threatened to shoot the frightened woman.
And a week earlier, on 1 May, three brazen armed robbers carried out a robbery at Shoprite at Nyanga Junction mall, leading to a 12-hour hostage drama.
The robbers had targeted a social grant paypoint.
During a shootout between robbers and security, armed response officer Patrick Castle, 28, of TSU Group was wounded and later died in hospital while one of the skelms was injured.
Another robber was killed by cops when negotiations ended while a third suspect escaped.
Ten hostages, which included cleaners and management at Shoprite, were rescued unharmed.
