“This is her”. These were the words allegedly uttered by a man before he instructed his friend to fatally shoot an off-duty security guard in the face outside Nyanga Junction on Monday night.
Police say Bukelwa Pike, 42, was shot multiple times while her 35-year-old colleague survived the attack that has detectives baffled.
Manenberg police station commander Brigadier Enolium Joseph says at 6.30pm, Pike, who is a security guard at Shoprite, was walking down Duinefontein Road when they were approached by three men.
“They just passed the hawkers when one of the men walked up and said: ‘This is her’,” he explains.
“His accomplice then took out a gun and fired several times. She was shot in the face, shoulder and back while the other security guard was only shot in the hand.
“Both of them were rushed to Heideveld Day Hospital but she succumbed to her injuries.”
Joseph says the motive for the murder has not yet been established and detectives are investigating the possibility that her murder may be linked to her work.
“At this stage it is unclear but it appears that she was targeted according to the statement from the eyewitness. A case of murder and attempted murder have been opened,” he adds.
When asked whether there had been any incident at the store, Shoprite said: “The supermarket chain expresses its sincere condolences to the guard’s family. The incident happened while the guard was off duty.”
Daily Voice visited Pike’s home in Wesbank on Tuesday but her family was not present.
Anyone with information regarding this murder is asked to call Manenberg police on 021 699 9400.
