Police say the man passed away at Tygerberg Hospital after the attack at a relative’s house in Leonsdale at the weekend.
Elsies River police officers were called to Tygerberg Hospital on Sunday morning where they were told that Clifford Erasmus, 60, had succumbed to his injuries.
“He lived in Talana Close in Leonsdale and it is alleged that the deceased was bitten by a Pit bull dog at his residence. The victim died in hospital as a result of his injuries,” a source close to the investigation said.
When the Daily Voice visited Clifford’s relative’s property on Wednesday, no dogs could be seen.
A woman at the house said Clifford did not live there and declined to comment.
However, a neighbour who asked not to be named, says the dog bit the oupa in the face during the attack.
“It happened on Saturday night. Clifford was drunk, and jumped over the fence at the back.
“A child at the house took him inside to sleep, and closed the gate,” he says.
“Toe wil Clifford gaan pee en hy maak die hek oop en die hond bespring vir hom.
“It is their dog. He [Clifford] is related to them, but he didn’t live here. The family was not at home at the time. Die hond het die kant van sy gesig af gevat.”

The man says the family took the oupa to the hospital and the next day the community found out he had died.
Police spokesperson, Sinathi Joni, confirmed the incident, and said Elsies River police have opened an inquest docket.
Last month, four-month-old Fantasia Heneker, died after being mauled by a Pit bull in her home in 10th Avenue, Ravensmead.
The little girl was attacked by the dog on Saturday 16 September and was
apparently dragged from her bed while her mom, Robina Abramse, was
hanging out washing.
And in July, a two-year-old boy from Hanover Park was hospitalised after he was nearly mauled to death by a Pit bull.
The family of Sufyaan Loggenberg told the Daily Voice that the hond tore off parts of the little boy’s brow and forehead and he would have to undergo skin grafting to repair the damage to his face.
