A 50-year-old domestic worker nearly had her hands ripped off by a pit bull that ran into a tuck shop in Strandfontein.
Katie Moses of 7de Laan informal settlement was at the winkel in Frigate Road to buy toiletries for her daughter who went on camp with a surfing club this week.
The mom of two says the dog ran into the shop and began pulling on the plastic bag she had in her hand.
“I was just waiting for my bread when the dog ran into the shop and began pulling at the bag and then it started biting my hands and locked its jaws,” she says.
Katie says community members and the shop owner tried to fight off the dog by beating it with a spade and throwing paraffin in its face.
“When the paraffin was thrown in its face, the dog let go,” she explains.
Maggie Kampher, a member of the Strandfontein Community Policing Forum, says they have yet to be contacted by the dog’s owner.

“People said that when the incident happened, the owner said ‘don’t say the dog belongs to me’.”
Katie was treated at the Mitchells Plain District
Hospital.
Belinda Abraham of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA confirms their mobile clinic operators who were working in the area at the time caught the dog.
“They were able to find the dog and bring him back to the SPCA where he is being treated in our hospital for minor injuries to his face,” she says.
“Dogs never attack for no reason and sadly the reason is often irresponsible pet ownership. This includes intentionally obtaining a puppy bred from aggressive parents.”
She said dogs roaming the streets are in contravention of by-laws and the owner will be held liable.
