A Gugulethu taxi owner has been shot and killed, allegedly by a passenger in his car after he was ambushed.
Witnesses say that when they arrived at the scene, they found the deceased alone in the car that came to a halt on Makhandlela Crescent in Old Crossroads.
The taxi owner, Pastor Zukile Ntenda, 65, died instantly from the three bullets which were fired at his head on Monday afternoon.
The victim was not only a taxi owner and pastor, but also a well-known businessman in KTC and a funeral director.
A source told the Daily Voice the killer posed as a passenger under the pretence of accompanying Ntenda to a house where a body was supposed to be collected. He then shot Ntenda and fled the scene.
Codeta has confirmed to the Daily Voice that Zukile was a Codeta member.
General Secretary Andile Khanyi says: “The deceased was part of Codeta, but he was in the Joe Slovo branch.”
A police source says the murder might be a hit and related to the ongoing taxi violence in Cape Town.
“We don’t really know the motive, but nothing was taken out of the car so I assume that this was a hit.
“I understand from the conversation held on the scene that he had just come from a business trip to the Eastern Cape when he was attacked.”
The incident happened around 5pm in Makhandlela Crescent in Old Crossroads.
Shocked residents watched as the police combed the area for clues.
Cops arrived and found the man’s body in the driver’s seat.
The woman says: “I heard the man he was with in the car is the shooter. But by the time the police arrived he had already fled the scene.”
When the Daily Voice arrived at Zukile’s Gugs home on Tuesday, a family member who introduced herself as Lindiwe said the victim’s wife was not at home, and asked for time for the family to deal with their grief.
SAPS’ FC van Wyk says they are investigating the murder with no arrests yet.
“Circumstances surrounding a shooting incident on Monday at about 5pm at Makhandlela Street in Old Crossroads, where a 65-year-old man was found deceased in the driver’s seat of his vehicle, are under investigation,” Van Wyk says.
“A murder case was opened for further investigation.
“Detectives are hard at work following up on all available leads.”
