A fire engulfed a storage factory in Athlone on Thursday morning and by late afternoon, firefighters were still struggling to contain the blaze.
Just before 11am, firefighters were dispatched to Unit 2 on Carrick Road in the Athlone Industria.
The storage facility is loca-
ted next to the Elite Hardware store which was not affected by the fire.
According to the City’s Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, the storage facility is rented out and holds non-perishable items such as rice, sugar, canned goods, candles and make-up.
It is unclear who the storage unit belongs to and what the estimation of damages are.
He says fortunately no injuries were reported when firefighters arrived at the scene.
A hydraulic platform, four fire engines, a water tanker, a rescue vehicle, and 26 firefighters were dispatched to the scene.
By 5pm yesterday Carelse said it would take several more hours for the blaze to be extinguished.
