The two men accused of poisoning and murdering an elderly couple in their Ottery home were granted R800 bail each last week in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court, to the consternation of the victims’ family.
Rugaya and Riedewaan Addinall , both 82, were found dead on 6 January by a family member.
The couple’s door to their separate entrance was locked.
The family’s gardener, Gcinile Litha Gcobelakhe, 29, and his friend, Lwazi Tsibatsiba, 22, were arrested and face four charges each two of murder, as well as robbery with aggravating circumstances and attempted theft.
Police arrested the duo in Delft four days after the couple’s bodies were discovered, and still in possession of the Addinalls’ car keys, a remote control device and rat poison.
At his first appearance, Gcobelakhe, who worked for the deceaseds’ family for years, said he wanted to confess before he was assigned an advocate.
The couple’s son, Anwar, says he is disappointed that the two suspects have been granted bail.
Anwar says a great injustice has been done to his parents’ memory.
“There is always this talk of human rights, but from the victim’s side, you also have to ask what about the rights of the victim and their family?
“I was told they were released on R800 bail. I was taken aback because it’s not a petty crime. It was two elderly people callously murdered.”
The accused were warned to be back at court on 20 June.
