A dom skelm, who stole a car in Lotus River, was nabbed by Cape Flats residents at his home in Belthorn Estate after the vehicle was spotted in his driveway.
According to a source, the boef, who was caught on Tuesday night was also wearing the Jordan takkies the owner had left in the car.
Pictures of the green Nissan Sentra were circulated on various WhatsApp groups on Tuesday morning, with an alert that it had been stolen from the owner’s yard.
The source says the car was flagged on Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) cameras across the southern suburbs and police were asked to keep an eye out for the vehicle.
“All we knew at the time was that it was stolen in Lotus River and it tripped a few cameras. The guy was so stupid he drove with the original [registration] plates and at one point was picked up moving through Crawford and Gatesville,” says the source.
Later in the evening, police were alerted to a commotion in Innisfree Road where residents had spotted the stolen vehicle in the skelm’s driveway.
“It was just after 6pm. The car was just there, parked in the driveway behind a gate,” explains the source.
“The people got him out and wanted to moer him. A local security company was called to calm the situation and the man was taken to Lansdowne Police Station.
“When he got there, we could see he was dik gerook; his eyes were red and he was out of it. He was wearing the blue takkies that belonged to the owner.
“He told us that he bought the takkies for R100 but couldn’t explain how the car got to his house and why he had the keys in his pocket. The people were kwaad with him. He is lucky he didn’t get a hiding, it looks like he just stole the car and went on a joy ride.”
Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirms the car was stolen in the Grassy Park precinct and recovered in Innisfree Road at 6.40pm.
“A 33-year-old suspect was arrested and he is facing a charge of being in possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
“He is due to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court [Thursday].”
