Mitchells Plain police are looking for the shooter of a six-year-old boy who was wounded in a gang shooting in Beacon Valley on Saturday.
It’s believed the little boy had been playing outside his home when two rival gangs opened fire on each another in Lagonda Crescent.
The child was hit in the abdomen and it’s understood the bullet went right through him.
According to witnesses, the child’s father, who is a mechanic, had run outside to help his son but was also shot and wounded in the process.
However, police could not confirm this.
Shot boy, six
The boy was rushed to hospital where he was in a stable condition on Sunday, according to a family friend who asked not to be named.
Shocked residents said they are sickened by the shooting of an innocent boy, even though there is a greater police presence and even the army was deployed on the Cape Flats.
Shamiela Williams, 57, who lives in the area, says: “These are our own children who are killing innocent people. We need to take a stand because no army can fix what we have allowed in our communities for so long.”
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut confirmed the boy’s shooting.
“(On Saturday) at around 9.30am, a six-year-old boy was shot and wounded in Lagonda Crescent, Beacon Valley, when he was caught in the crossfire of rival gangs,” he says.
“He was admitted to hospital and no one has been arrested for this incident as yet.
