An unemployed mother from Woodstock is worried about her daughter’s care after her child support grant was stopped more than five months ago.
The 45-year-old woman said she has gone to all the Sassa local offices to find out what was happening.
Nadia Toyer says she hasn’t been able to find a proper job and her 12-year-old daughter is suffering.
“I do not expect the government to take care of my child, but I have been struggling to find work,” she says.
“The R420 I receive is barely enough for her total care, but it helps me get her some of the stuff I am unable to get for her right now.
“I am a single parent and trying to find work. I’m also trying to just take care of my child. Nobody at the offices has been able to assist me.
But Sassa spokesperson, Shivani Wahab, said Nadia’s bank account was suspended for suspected fraud, along with thousands of other beneficiaries.
“Sassa implemented a bank verification process and this resulted in delays in the payment of social grants to those who were affected,” he says.
“In August, a total of 6000 social grant payments were initially stopped nationally. That number was then reduced to 500 suspended social grant accounts.
“In September, Sassa strictly implemented bank verification (confirming that the details of the beneficiary and the account holder match).
“This has resulted in a number of beneficiaries not being paid. Our records reflect that Ms. Toyer has a Capitec account, and Capitec account holders were part of the verification process.
“The beneficiary can visit the Sassa Cape Town Local Office to have the Child Support Grant reinstated. The beneficiary will be reimbursed with back pay from the last payment date.”
Nadia said she would be going back to the office to try and get her unpaid money.
