The son of a school caretaker arrested for allegedly merting cough syrup has joined his father in the holding cells after he was caught with a stash of dagga on Monday.
Grassy Park station commander Colonel Dawood Laing says just two days after cops busted his father for cough syrup and dagga, the 23-year-old son was arrested at the family’s home in Perth Road.
“On Monday at about 1pm, officers returned to the home after receiving a tip-off and arrested the son and his 30-year-old friend with a stash of high-grade dagga worth R1 000,” says Laing.
“They also found a scale, two cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash and arrested them.”
On Saturday, cops raided the house and arrested the 62-year-old, who is a caretaker at Grassy Park High School, after they found a box of Stilpane syrup and dagga hidden in a drain on the property.
BUSTED: The son and his pal
In addition, Laing says, they found five wheelie bins suspected to be stolen after a spate of thefts in the area.
The father was fingered as the suspected mert selling the syrup to laaities for just R30.
Children mix the syrup with fizzy drinks to make a concoction called Lean, which is used as a date rape drug on girls, who are attacked after they pass out.
Laing says the father will appear at the Wynberg Magistrate's Court today on various charges, while his son will appear later in the week.
Western Cape Education Department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond says the management of Grassy Park High is unaware of any evidence or reports that the caretaker was distributing substances at the school.
“They are in the process of investigating whether the learners have been approached for the sale of any drugs. However, there has been no previous evidence or reports that would support this claim,” she says.
