A suspected drug dealer has been shot and wounded during a high-speed chase with cops on the N1 after an alleged drug deal.
The man, whose identity is yet to be revealed, is currently receiving medical attention in hospital.
A source from Kraaifontein Sector 4 Neighbourhood Watch says the man had been acting suspiciously in the parking lot of a supermarket on Wednesday.
The team, suspecting a drug deal in progress, reacted immediately and alerted cops.
MAN DOWN: Suspected mert gets medical attention
The neighbourhood watch member says they became even more suspicious because the man was wearing a fez and was not celebrating Eid.
“The man is Muslim, we thought to ourselves, and it is Eid today and look what he is busy with,” the source says.
GETAWAY: Damaged VW Polo
“Our neighbourhood watch recognised the white VW Polo, which has become known in the Brackenfell area,” said the crime fighter.
“Once we realised it was the suspect’s car, we immediately contacted the police. We were impressed with the police’s quick reaction.”
What followed was like a scene out an action movie as the suspect tried to escape by driving into oncoming traffic on the N1, which ended at the Brighton turn-off on the N1 near Kraaifontein.
“The suspect drove on the wrong side of the road on the N1 and he was apparently shot and wounded by police. “His vehicle was also searched by police,” says the source.
The wounded suspect was taken to Karl Bremer Hospital in Bellville.
Police spokesperson, André Traut, says further investigation on the shooting will be handled by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid).
“This office can confirm that the circumstances surrounding an incident on the N1 in Kraaifontein are being investigated after a 59-year-old man suspected to be a drug dealer was shot and wounded during a high-speed pursuit,” Traut explains.
