Shaun “Blomme” Hector, 52, died instantly when the driver of a white VW Golf MK1 knocked him through the fence of the New Apostolic Church in Milton Road, Scottsville.
It is understood the driver, who is from the area, was celebrating his birthday and suiping all day.
Shaun’s berieved mother, Sheila Hector, 74, says her son didn’t stand a chance and his two friends who were walking with him are lucky to be alive.

“His friends managed to jump out of the way when they saw the speeding car come their way.
“The car crushed my son and rammed him into the church yard and he had vibracrete slab pieces on his body.”
Sheila says just a week ago, Shaun was so proud to be a strooijonker in a wedding and now she has to prepare his funeral.
“I am going to miss Blomme’s smile. He was a jack of all trades. He got his nickname because he would randomly pick flowers along the road and give them to women, even if it wasn’t Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day,” she says sadly.
Police spokesperson, Captain Nolonwabo Tshengu, says the driver was arrested at the scene and charged with culpable homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol.
The 29-year-old suspect appeared in the Kuils River Magistrate's Court on Friday.
