A 12-year-old Hanover Park boy is fighting for his life after being struck by a gang bullet on Sunday night.
Abdul Raziq Adams, 12, and two others were gunned down when an unidentified skollie opened fire on a group of women and children in Lansry Walk shortly before 8pm.
Residents say they got a skrik when gunshots rang out in the quiet street. They say shortly before the shooting, a maroon Toyota Tazz was spotted at the end of the street and one of the occupants jumped out and opened fire on the group.
LUCKY: Lekeesha, 2, is fortunate that a bullet only grazed her head
“There were just moms and children in the road and they don’t normally shoot here, so we all got a skrik when that guy just got out and started shooting. Hy was baie wild en daar was klomp skote. We don’t know who he is,” says a resident, who asked not to be named.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, confirms the shooting and says police officers arrived on the scene at 9.45pm where they were informed that three victims were shot and wounded by unidentified suspects.
“The victims were transported to a medical facility,” says Rwexana.
Resident Titus Fillis says his daughter Elnesha Kiewit, 24, ran into the house holding her niece, Lekeesha, 2.
“She didn’t even know she [Elnesha] was hit in the arm. The bullet is lodged in her arm. Lekeesha was so lucky the bullet just scraped her head and she was fine, but if it was one centimetre closer, she could have been dead!” he says.
WAR ZONE: Lansry Walk was the scene of shooting before 8pm on Sunday
“I took all of them to Heideveld [Day] Hospital and Elnesha was sent to Groote Schuur Hospital where they stabilised her. We are waiting for the doctors to hear if they will operate on her because they told us it [the bullet] is lodged in her bone and is close to a nerve.
“They also hit another guy, Alfonso Arendse, 34, in the leg, but he has been discharged.”
Raziq’s father, Rushdien Kippie, 33, says the boy went for emergency surgery at Red Cross Children’s Hospital after the bullet ruptured his right lung causing it to collapse; it also hit his kidney.
The boy, who is a learner at Belmor Primary School, is now in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and his family is praying he recovers.
WOUNDED: Elnesha Kiewit, 24, at the clinic
“The bullet went in through his back and the doctors told us that his body was poisoned by the bullet.
“They had to drain his blood because his organs, like his kidney, were hit. We are all so stressed and his brothers are getting sick from all the worrying. He is in a critical condition.”
Police are investigating attempted murder cases and no arrests have been made.
