A 19-year-old man was gunned down in Bokmakierie in what is believed to have been a case of mistaken identity.
Joshua van der Berg was shot three times and died on the scene in 10th Avenue on Thursday evening, just hours after a member of the Junior Cisko Yakkies gang was shot in the same street.
The 21-year-old victim was shot in the leg.
Joshua lived in 11th Avenue with his aunt and had gone to friends when he was attacked.
The shooting happened at the canal along Jan Smuts Drive and community members say he was not the intended target, but believe the shooters assumed the group of boys were gangsters.
Residents also say they are afraid to come forward with information for fear of being targeted by the killers.
One aunty said: “The area has been quiet for a while now. This boy was nobody's enemy. He was a nice child and came from a good family. It is sad what is happening. I hope they catch the murderers.”
Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, said Athlone police are investigating the incident.
“Just before 10pm on Thursday a 19-year-old male was shot multiple times and died on the scene in 10th Avenue, Bokmakierie,” he confirmed.
“Athlone police have registered a murder case for investigation. Anyone with any information about this fatal shooting incident can contact Athlone Police Station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.”
