A young man frantically called his father moments before he was shot dead inside his Wendy house in Elsies River.
Wilfred Lewis, 65, believes his son, Charlton Lewis, 22, was reaching out to him before he was shot by ruthless gunmen on Monday at 2.25pm at Springbok Place in Balvenie.
Wilfred admits his son was a member of the 26s gang and was in and out of jail for the past two years on drug and gun charges.
But he says his son was raised in the church and not to become a gangster.
Charlton was expected to make an appearance at the Goodwood Magistrates’ Court on Monday for the possession of an illegal firearm and had been released from prison a week earlier after being cleared of drug-related charges.
“On Monday before 2pm, Charlton called me to my cellphone and he asked me where I am,” he says.
“I told him I am in Parow and asked him why. He never answered me.”
On his way home while travelling via Balvenie Drive, his wife received the news that Charlton had been killed.
GUNNED DOWN: Charlton Lewis
Charlton was shot while sitting inside his Wendy house and still had his cellphone in his hands.
“I believe this happened just after he spoke to me, the people said it was the time he was talking to me,” he says.
“They shot him from behind while he sat.”
Wilfred believes the motive is gang-related: “He came out of Goodwood Prison last week after drugs were found on a rooftop where he was found in January.
“He also faced a possession of an illegal firearm charge and was to appear in court on Monday. Charlton was raised in the church and as a toddler he used to fall asleep under the benches in church. When he reached 20, he began making the wrong choices.”
Police spokesperson, FC van Wyk, confirmed the shooting and said a murder case has been opened for investigation.
