The alleged leader of the Young Ones gang in Elsies River could not escape death for a second time and was gunned down at Tygerberg Hospital on Tuesday.
Jonathan “Appels” Hein, 40, was killed in the parking area of Tygerberg, where he went for a medical check-up.
Two weeks ago, on 3 April, Hein was shot in the neck and fingers while sitting in a car near a fish and chips shop on the corner of Balvenie Avenue and Halt Road in Elsies.
Appels was admitted to hospital, while another person who was with him was not injured.
A meme then went viral, in which the character Smeagol from the Lord of the Rings movies says the community wanted Hein dead, warning him to “never come back”.
DEAD: Jonathan “Appels” Hein
Hein was discharged from hospital and yesterday went back for a check-up and to have his dressings changed.
After his check-up, and as he was walking towards his car, he was confronted by two unknown men who fired several shots at him.
He was hit several times and died at the scene.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel André Traut, confirms: “(Tuesday) at around 11.15am, an adult male from Elsies River was shot and killed in the parking area of Tygerberg Hospital by two suspects who fled the scene. The suspects are yet to be arrested.”
Tygerberg spokesperson, Laticia Pienaar, says traumatised staff are receiving counselling, while the hospital will work with police and Provincial Forensic Services to nab the shooters.
