Two police officers were hospitalised on Tuesday after their van collided with a truck on Robert Sobukwe Drive while transporting prisoners.
The intersection at Symphony Way was closed off on Tuesday shortly before 9am as paramedics and Fire and Rescue officials attended to the officers, the truck driver and a passenger.
According to a source the officers from Delft Police Station were transporting 10 male prisoners from the station to Bellville Magistrate's Court when the crash happened.
“The two officers had slight and mild injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment. The truck driver had facial injuries and the passenger had injuries on his right arm and neck, but they were not serious. The prisoners were at the back of the van and they were fine so they were all taken to court for their appearances.”
Traffic cops diverted motorists and the two smashed vehicles were next to each other in the intersection.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut, says: “The circumstances surrounding a state vehicle accident are being investigated following an incident this morning around 8.43am where a SAPS truck transporting prisoners to court was involved in an accident with a light delivery vehicle in Robert Sobukwe Road, Bellville South.
“Two SAPS members were injured and admitted to hospital for treatment. The driver and the passenger of the light delivery vehicle sustained minor injuries and were treated on the scene. The prisoners were not injured and transported to court.”
Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to contact Bellville South Police Station on 021 950 1355 or Crime stop on 08600 1011.
