However, mense have been warned not to approach the dogs as they might attack.
Dog owner, Nathan Johannes, says his beloved Bullie and Babes must have gotten a huge skrik when the flames engulfed his room at the back of his parents’ house and bolted.
His brother Gino says the fire started on Saturday afternoon at about 3.30pm while Nathan was at work.
“I was in the house, my mom was in her room and my brother was at work. I heard a loud bang and thought: 'Now what is that?' Then I heard a second bang and saw the flames. I rushed to get a hosepipe to put the fire out,” Gino explains.
He says Bullie and Babes are usually kept in the backyard but as the fire spread, neighbours broke down the zinc sheets between the two properties to get access to the burning house.
“They broke it (the fence) down so they could get in and throw water from the back. They dogs must have escaped through the back,” Gino reckons.
DESTRUCTION: Nathan Johannes’ room at the back of his parents’ Bonteheuwel house
Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, Edward Bosch, says the cause of the blaze is undetermined at this stage.
Ward councillor, Angus McKenzie, visited the family on Sunday and advised that the Disaster Risk Management department provide materials for the back room to be rebuilt.
Nathan says while he lost his clothes, bed and other personal belongings in the blaze, he is most heartbroken over his two dogs.
“Bullie is nine and Babes is about two years old. I am very hartseer because I raised them and they are always at the back,” he says.
“I spent a lot of petrol on Saturday night driving through Bonteheuwel looking for them but found nothing.”
PANIC: Brother Gino Johannes says he rushed to get hosepipe to put the fire out on Saturday
He has now made an appeal to Bonteheuwel residents to help find the dogs so they can be brought home.
“I cannot give a reward but I just hope people will be able to find them,” he adds.
“Bully is aggressive and may bite people. One year during Guy Fawkes a girl was bursting klappertjies and he nearly bit her but was stopped.”
Bully is a nine-year-old Carver Pit Bull with a pitch black coat and a white stripe on his chest, while Babes has a brown coat and a white stripe on her chest.
