A Bishop Lavis feeding scheme, which feeds more than 3000 residents during the lockdown, is facing a permanent closure due to a lack of donations.
The feeding scheme which was started by the Bishop Lavis Action Committee (Blac) following the announcement of a nationwide lockdown in April says their kassies are empty and they are now skarreling for food to feed their community.
When Daily Voice visited the feeding scheme at Bergville Primary School on Thursday, the group only had a pocket of butternut and a box of apples to feed residents.
Community Liaison Officer Amanda Davids says: “Right now we are skarreling to find a way to fill the pots for tonight.
“We feed once a day from nine places covering all the street committees.
“Blac sources the donations and at each cluster kitchen they prepare the food for their streets and deliver it to families in need”.
She says with many residents losing their jobs during the lockdown, the numbers are climbing each day.

“Working people have been left without a centre so the numbers climb each day at this stage we fear we will have to shut.
“We are very worried about what will happen to our community and we are desparate for help.
“The donations have decreased over time because of the financial impact.”
She says while many residents dug deep in their pockets to help need neighbours many are unable to assist.
“People even started using their tithings which they normally give at church to help us feed the community. But now many people are unable.”
