The owner of a local supermarket was hit with a gun over the head by a gang of robbers pretending to be cops.
The owner says about 12 men, two of them dressed as police officers, fled with cigarettes, an undisclosed amount of money and surveillance equipment.
The robbery at Fairdeal Supermarket in Lake Road, Lotus River happened on Wednesday just after 7pm.
Businessman Rafick Ebrahim, who was pistol-whipped, says the diewe pretended to be customers.
“Two of the men were dressed in full police uniform and two others were dressed smartly,” he says.
“The shop was quiet and they were shopping, but didn’t take anything.”
Rafick says he was standing at the till, and the next moment the skelms were on top of him, demanding keys.
“They didn’t know I was the store owner at first and pushed me to the ground with the customers,” he says.
When they realised he was the owner, they beat him with a gun in the head.
The suspects fled in a VW Amarok bakkie.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut, says there have been no arrests.
“The circumstances surrounding a robbery at a business in Lake Road, Lotus River are being investigated following an incident (on Wednesday) night around 7.20pm and suspects fled the scene with cash, cigarettes and a computer after they threatened and assaulted the victim. They are yet to be arrested.”
