Hot on the heels of a skelm, cops are lucky to be alive after their van went over a bridge.
On Thursday at about 9pm, officers noticed a suspicious vehicle in Simon’s Town linked to criminal activity, and upon seeing the officers, the suspects fled.
A high-speed car chase ensued onto the M5 highway which went horribly wrong when the police vehicle hit a barrier and flipped over the bridge.
The officers were rushed to a medical facility for treatment.
A crowd gathered around the mangled van as it lay on its side at the Raapenberg Road intersection.
Before paramedics arrived, people looked inside to see whether the officers were still alive.
Fortunately no other vehicles were involved in the incident.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed: “Police members were pursuing a suspicious vehicle in Simon’s Town after receiving a complaint.
“The chase ensued along the M5, however, it came to a halt when the police vehicle crashed into a barrier on the M5 and flipped over the bridge onto Raapenberg Road.
“Paramedics arrived and the members were transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment,” Van Wyk said.
Although the suspects managed to flee, their victory was short-lived when members of the flying squad arrested them.
“Members of Flying Squad pulled over the suspicious vehicle on the N1,” he says.
“They arrested 14 suspects, aged between 28 and 34, for charges related to reckless and negligent driving, possession of suspected stolen
property and attempted murder.”
