The City of Cape Town is investigating a Cape Flats bakery after two women have reported finding objects in their bread.
Last week Neliswa Matakane, 45, came forward to slam Golden Crust Bakery in Delft after she found a battery in her bread.
The mom of three says she bought three loaves for R7.99 each and got a skrik when she saw the rusty battery as she was preparing lunches.
Golden Crust distribution manager, Sedick Arendse, said: “It appears to be a dough thermometer battery. We’ve not received the bread from the complainant in order to have it tested in a laboratory and therefore cannot confirm that it is indeed our bread.”
This week Atlantis ouma Shereen Davids, 51, provided photographs showing she found a piece of string in her bread she bought in January.

“I got a skrik when I opened it and reported it to them and they came to fetch the bread. Then two days later they just left four loaves of bread at my work, but I find this totally unacceptable.”
Golden Crust told the Daily Voice: “It was a piece of string from the flour bag that got into the dough as a result of negligence in the mixing area.
“Disciplinary action was taken against staff in the make-up area. We have a Food Safety System in place, with quarterly inspections.”
Mayco Member for Community Services and Health, Zahid Badroodien, says their Environmental Health Department will inspect the bakery to check on their hygiene practices.
“Pieces of rope may be from the flour bags, however, a battery in the bread is a great concern and not something one associates in a bakery. I have asked the department to investigate.”
