One of the suspects alleged to be behind the assassination of top cop Lieutenant-Colonel Charl Kinnear, 52, will appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
Hawks spokesperson, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, says the 39-year-old man is being brought to Cape Town after being arrested on Wednesday night.
The senior investigator who worked for the Anti-Gang Unit (Unit) died after he was gunned down outside his home in Gearing Road, Bishop Lavis last Friday.
Kinnear’s death sparked an outcry on the Cape Flats after it was revealed that police protection had been withdrawn from his home despite threats.
He was the lead investigator in several high-profile investigations including the extortion case involving nightclub security boss Nafiz Modack, the murder of top criminal lawyer Pete Mihalik and a firearm licensing fraud case which led to the arrest of cops in Gauteng.
Mulaudzi says: “The suspect was arrested in Gauteng on Wednesday and details surrounding the murder are still unknown. More arrests are not ruled out as investigations are still underway”.
