A Sherwood Park mom got a fright yesterday when she found a decapitated cat head on her doorstep.
Mureeda Cozyn, 35, says while she is vrek bang of the notorious Manenberg cat killer, she had not heard of any incidents in Sherwood Park.
The distraught cat lover says she left her home in Third Avenue at 7.20am and did not see the tiny cat head on her stoep.
“It was still a bit dark that time and it was moved one side so I did not step on it or see it when I left,” she says.
“I got home at 8am after dropping my children and that is when I saw it.
“I was so shocked to see the head of a kitten cut clean off and placed in my doorway. I thereafter contacted the neighbourhood watch.”
Cozyn says she felt sick to her stomach and now worries that the serial cat killer is back: “It’s sick! Who does this? I hope they catch this person soon.”
Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWS) spokesperson Allan Perrins says this comes after 10 days of no killings: “After 10 days of relative peace and quiet, the Manenberg cat killer has struck again.”
“This time the perpetrators beheaded a tiny ginger kitten leaving its severed head on the doormat of a resident.”
He says the head was X-rayed and examined by their resident veterinarian who determined that it was deliberately chopped off by someone using what appears to be “a sharp bladed instrument”.
“We are unsure of the whereabouts of the remainder of the kitten’s body that might hold further clues as to who is committing these heinous atrocities.”
He said investigations would be ramped up and the AWS will not make any further media statements until they “have something substantial to report.”
A total of 43 cats have been killed since 15 July.
Last week, cops took a suspect in for questioning but the man was released without being charged.
The AWS believed the Manenberg man was the owner of two dogs it had confiscated days earlier, and which had been used to hunt the cats, according to video footage that was studied.
Police said the man denied he was the dogs’ owner and he was released due to a lack of evidence.
The AWS is offering a reward of R20 000.
