A tavern and taxi owner has been ruthlessly gunned down while driving his car in Delft.
Fanele Sambene, 53, was driving to a friend’s place when he was shot seven times by an unknown gunman.
The shooter had apparently waited for the victim to close his tavern on Tuesday evening, followed and shot him on the corner of Assegai and Tosti streets.
His wife, Nomathamsanqa, 52, explains: “He came by before 6pm for his routine check at the tavern and the braai place.
“And then he said he was going to a friend’s place not far from our business place.
“He was apparently followed by a car.”
The devastated widow says she heard gunshots not long after Fanele left.
“I didn’t really care when I heard the gunfire because I assumed it was a gang fight.
“But then people came and told me Fanele had been shot.
“When I arrived, he was still alive, but community members advised me to go home.”
She adds that police were already at the scene, but the ambulance had not arrived yet.
Nomathamsanqa says her husband owned taxis, a tavern and a braai joint.
“We live in Kuils River, and our businesses are in Delft. The person who shot him must have been alerted to it.
“I don’t know why he was targeted.”
Police spokeswoman Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana has confirmed cops are investigating the murder.
“According to information, police attended to the complaint at the address, upon their arrival they found the body of the man inside a vehicle with gunshot wounds to his head,” she said.
“Detectives are following up on leads and no one has been arrested at this stage.”
