Five people accused of trying to kill defence attorney Advocate William Booth is applying for bail.
Kauthar Brown, 35, Ebrahim Deare, 36, Riyaad Gesant, 32, Igshaan Williams, 57 and Kim Kashiefa Smith, 32, appeared at the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on Friday where they informed the court who their lawyers were.
The case was then postponed to 4 June for their formal bail application.
They are facing charges of conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, the illegal possession of a firearm and of ammunition, and five counts of being in contravention of the Disaster Management Regulations.
Initially seven persons, five men and two women, were taken into custody.
The five suspects were linked to Booth’s shooting via CCTV footage and were arrested last week at a house in Albert Road, Woodstock.
The bust comes after the investigating officer, Colonel Eddie Clark made a public appeal for assistance in identifying them.
Three days before the attack, two suspects were caught on surveillance cameras in Booth’s Higgovale community in Cape Town.
The men were dropped off in a white Hyundai Credo.
The vehicle had a temporary GP number plate, and one of the men was wearing Kappa branded clothing.
Booth had reportedly been in his garage and hid behind his wife’s vehicle as two gunmen wearing surgical masks opened fire on him at 7.30am. Booth was not harmed.
