A Cape Flats father accused of concocting a grand plan to bust his killer son out of the mang is in the spotlight again after it was revealed that a statement by a 204 witness was shared among bandiete in Pollsmoor Prison.
This was revealed at the Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ Court on Thursday as Moegsien Haywood, 60, appeared alongside Luqman Lewis, 34, and Aaqiel Morris, 35, on firearm and money laundering charges.
Moegsien, the father of Ziyaad Haywood, 34, was caught in an undercover operation in May after he allegedly tried to buy AK47 rifles, explosives and hand grenades on the black market, which police sources say was meant to be used to bomb a prison truck and free his son.
Moegsien along with his wife, Juleiga, were arrested for harbouring a fugitive in July 2018 after cops found Ziyaad, a wanted killer, hiding in a cupboard in their Lotus River home.
Ziyaad evaded police for nearly two years and faces multiple charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery, kidnapping and other offences.
On Thursday, Moegsien’s bail application was denied, but drama unfolded when defence advocate, Joe Weeber, requested the details of the undercover operation.
The State prosecutor objected, saying a statement by a 204 witness who piemped Moegsien had already been passed around Pollsmoor, resulting in the State witness being threatened.
The court will decide on 9 December whether to grant the defence access to the information they requested.
On 9 November 2018, cops received a tip-off that Moegsien had hatched a plan to help his son escape from Wynberg Magistrates’ Court.
But he was thwarted when cops blocked the courtroom doors and surrounded Ziyaad.
