A community activist has launched a Baby Saver at her home in Lavender Hill on Saturday.
Lucinda Evans, the founder of Philisa Abafazi Bethu NGO, has urged mothers of unwanted babies to bring them to her instead of killing them or abandoning them on a vullishoop.
The baby saver is a metal box in which an unwanted baby can be placed, from where the infant can be taken to the proper authorities for safekeeping.
A few weeks ago Lucinda appealed for help to install the Baby Saver and says many have answered her call.
The Baby Saver was installed on the inside of her boundary wall, complete with a silent alarm that will alert volunteers whenever a baby has arrived.
“We’re happy we could launch the Baby Saver as fast as we could,” says Lucinda.
“All women who are pregnant and don’t know what to do with their babies can access our baby saver.”

The Baby Saver is located on the corners of Philmau Road and Hilary Avenue in Lavender Hill.
Lucinda says they also have a baby room where the infant will be kept until further arrangement is made.
“When the baby is put in the saver, we will ensure the baby gets the necessary medical help and also try and find a good home for the baby with the help of government departments,” Lucinda explains.
“Women in certain situations can come to our offices at Lavender Hill High School so we can give them the necessary help.
“Women need to know they don’t need to put their babies on a dump, sloot, bin or throw them away. There’s hope and we’re here.”
